All eyes have been on the United Nations this week as they hold their 72nd Regular Session of the UN General Assembly at their New York headquarters. In the past 2 years, the UN has put a big focus on what has been dubbed on social media as #globalgoals. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) consist of “17 Goals to Transform Our World.” Each goal is then broken down into specific targets that are clearly defined. You can find the 17 goals listed here: Sustainable Development Goals
Established in 2015, this new sustainable development agenda aims to “end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all” by the year 2030. So how can these 12 SDGs transform both the world, and your independent practice as a financial advisor?
We know there is a lot of competition out there for financial advisors. The best strategy for success is to find a unique and distinct way to differentiate yourself from the rest of the pack. If you’ve read our blog before, you know we are strong supporters of Impact Investing and see this investment strategy as the future. With Impact Investing gaining popularity, it’s only fitting to predict an increase in the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals by corporations as well.
The Entrepreneurs Organization of New York is a perfect example of how the SDGs are gaining corporate adoption. EONY recently announced their collaboration with the UN to support the SDGs. Through this initiative, many EO members and chapters have pledged their support to embrace one of the SDGs into their businesses.
As an independent financial advisor, especially one with a focus on sustainable, ESG, or Impact Investing, adopting one of the SDGs would likely resonate with your existing and potential clients giving you a strong edge over the competition.
